Still Life Workshop 22nd April 2026

TIME: 9.30am for 10.00am start

COST: $15.00 for members $25.00 for non-members

A Still Life is a moment in time captured by way of painting or a 3D design. In Australian Floral Art it is 3D design, with the inclusion of horticultural material that does not predominate.
All of the Elements and Principles of Design need to be considered and adhered to. Especially Scale and Proportion and Rhythm.
A story is being told, and the viewer’s eye needs to be guided through it and be told a clear story, not too cluttered but with enough items to convey your idea.

STILL LIFE – AFAA Manual page 88
In a still life design plant material does not predominate.
Objects should be actual in size and true to their function and are placed at varying heights to achieve a well-spaced and balanced three-dimensional effect.
A varied silhouette is desirable, and the objects chosen should be of various shapes and heights.
Elevation can be provided by the discreet use of blocks. A complimentary drape or board may be used to link and unify.
MORNING: Demonstrations including 2 designs being critiqued and altered to improve their adherence to the class and Principles and Elements.
AFTERNOON: Construction of your “Still Life” and formal group critique of designs.

BYO: Toolbox

PLUS A collection of items that you feel will work in a still life along with any stands, bases or props etc..
Horticultural material to enhance the design.
It may also be useful to bring a cover for the table if light grey is not a good base for your design, especially for photography.
As usual you will work two to a table, so your design needs to be kept appropriate to that size.
